A note about historic Place des Vosges: Place des Vosges (Paris) is the oldest and arguably the most beautify of all Paris squares (built by Henri IV in 1612 as place Royale to celebrate the wedding of Louis XIII to Anne of Austria). Place des Vosges Paris is located in the Marais district and practically draws the line between the 3rd and 4th Arrondissements. It has been named as Place des Vosges in 1800 to honor the French department the Vosges. The place is arranged around a large square made out of 36 symmetrical buildings, all with acres at their entrances, red brick and blue-tiled roofs, and large windows. Place des Vosges (Paris) is decorated with trees and fountains and as one of the unique places in Paris in which you are actually allowed to site on the grass, this is a lovely spot to have a picnic after visiting the street market on Boulevard Richard Lenoir (open on Thursdays and Saturdays mornings) for some food. The Place des Vosges square also has some nice art galleries, shops, and fine cafes. The world famous writer Victor Hugo lived here for almost 15 years at Hotel de Rohan.

Place des Vosges:
The Place des Vosges, originally Place Royale, is the oldest planned square in Paris, France. It is located in the Marais district, and it straddles the dividing-line between the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of Paris. It was a fashionable and expensive square to live in during the 17th and 18th centuries, and one of the main reasons for the chic nature of Le Marais among the Parisian nobility.

Number 6 of the Place des Vosges is the Hôtel de Rohan-Guémenée, and a school was housed there at various times. It is on the 2nd floor that Victor Hugo and his family lived from 1832 to 1848, before their exile to Guernesey. The apartment was transformed into a ‘Home Museum’ in 1902, becoming the House of Victor Hugo. Today it belongs to the City of Paris and is thus part of the treasures of Paris Museums, which inaugurated its renovation in May 2021. The building became a historical monument in 1954.

Place des Vosges is a Royal Square whose beautifully organized architecture was ordered by King Henri IV and consisted initially of 36 identical mansions except for the King’s and Queen’s pavilions.  Work began in 1605 and the square was inaugurated in 1612 by King Louis XIII in honor of his betrothal to Ana of Austria only two years after the death of his father King Henri IV.  It is the oldest Parisian square and was named after the first French département having paid its taxes fully following the French Revolution.

The quote of Victor Hugo engraved on one of the arches of the square is of particular inspiration to Fabien Rouillard: "To create is to remember". It must have inspired many artists, because the Marais district is a lovely promenade for Parisians as well as for visitors, and it is also a place rich in artistic and cultural creation, illustrated by the many art galleries present around the Place des Vosges, and by the musicians who enhance their music in the fabulous acoustics under the arches of the Place des Vosges.

Hidden Tea Room at Place des Vosges
The Maison Mulot has opened its first location outside of its historic St-Germain-des-Prés location in the Maison Victor Hugo museum in the Marais. They serve full lunch, and brunch on Sundays, in addition to pastries and light snacks. There are a dozen tables in the quiet garden courtyard, as well as a stylish indoor seating if the weather isn’t cooperative. Open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm.

Reveiws:
Dear Connie,
We had a wonderful time and the apartment was perfect for our purposes. We loved the neighborhood, and its proximity to key bus stops and Metro lines. We really appreciated our greeting from Cynthia and instructions on use of the apartment as well as restaurant and activity recommendations. The little bakery next door to the apartment was delightful, as was the Sunday street market. The street noise at night took a little getting used to, but is something you’d get in any big city. The only real complaint I’d have was that there were some problems with the security door in front getting stuck open toward the end of our visit. I asked Cynthia to let the building superintendent know. Most of all, we really appreciated your company’s flexibility during the pandemic, allowing us to reschedule our visit twice! It was really worth the wait. We would definitely consider staying there again, and will plan to contact Panache for our next trip.
Thanks,
Bates
