The Square Saint Romain is located on the left bank between Montparnasse
and Saint Germain in one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods
in Paris. The building, a 1927 art deco masterpiece, was once home to the
American expatriate writer Djuna Barnes (Nightwood); many distinguished
Parisians in business, government, and the arts call it home today. With
a full time concierge, security and maintenance are impeccable.
You enter the apartment from an intimate interior courtyard decorated with
large potted plants, window boxes, and wicker furniture. It is enjoyable
to have morning coffee or an evening aperitif here.
Inside is an elegant and comfortable one bedroom apartment (450 sq. feet),
decorated with a mix of art deco and contemporary furniture. In the
living room, built-in cabinets, high ceilings, lacquered molding, and
wonderful light add to the sense of chic. Views of greenery from two
courtyards give a feeling of country living in the city. The bedroom, with
its curved outer wall and light silk voile curtains, is a romantic
haven. The calm and quiet are truly extraordinary for an urban space!
Everything has been provided to make this apartment a home away from
home: dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer; microwave/convection
oven combo (with grill function); fully equipped kitchen with corian
countertops and new appliances; Trinitron cable tv with several English
language channels; telephone/fax/answering machine; dvd and vcr adaptable
to French and American standards; cd player/radio; unlimited high-speed
internet through DSL (with ethernet and USB modems), as well as all the
small things-- hair dryer, clock radio/alarm, iron and ironing board. A
high-quality sleeper sofa in the living room is available for guests. Maps
and guide books are provided.
The bathroom, newly renovated, has a glassed-in shower with grohe shower
head and a marble sink and counter with large mirror, as well as its own
heating unit and ventilation. WC is separate.
As for the neighborhood shopping and eating, you can’t do better anywhere
in Paris: The legendary Grande Epicerie at the Bon Marché, two blocks
away, has unsurpassed take-out and produce, perfect after those busy days
of museum-hopping. Many Parisians rank the Fromagerie Quatrehomme, just
down the street, as the best cheese shop in Paris. Vignobles de France
on the nearby rue Vanueau houses a treasure trove of French wine at great
prices. For clothes, objets, etc., the luxurious Bon Marché department
store is two blocks away, and it’s only a short walk to the Odeon/St
Sulpice neighborhood, with its designer boutiques. The charming rue du
Cherche-Midi, perpendicular to the rue Saint Romain, has the best shoe
shopping in Paris, as well as high end thrift shops and Poilane’s
legendary bakery.
From your quiet haven, you’re only a short walk to the Luxembourg
gardens, the Musée d’Orsay, and the Montparnasse train station, for
weekend getaways to Bordeaux or Brittany. The apartment is well served
by metro (Vaneau line 10) and bus lines.
