The apartment is located in the 3rd district just a short walk from the heart of the Marais.
The Marais is one of the oldest and most historic areas in Paris. A place of aristocratic residence in the seventeenth century, it was abandoned during the Revolution and became an architectural wasteland. The Marais was not touched by Baron Haussmann during his work in the 1830s to make Paris the most modern city in nineteenth-century Europe. As a result, the Marais retains its pre-nineteenth century splendour and old world charm. In 1962 it was declared an historic area, and restoration efforts were begun. The area is now one of Paris' most fashionable neighborhoods, with many galleries, restaurants, boutiques, museums and cultural centers.
YOUR COURETTE OR MINE?
Here in Le Marais, one of Paris’ most historic districts, what’s old is new, as the coolest of the city’s denizens make this arrondissements their home. Back in college, my friend Mimi shared with me her dream that someday she’d have a place here, right near the Hotel de Ville - City Hall. Since then, this section of the city, one of Paris’ oldest, has become hipper than the Rive Gauche.
Just two stops on the Metro from Gare de Lyon, this lovely quartier houses the diminutive-but-elegant Place des Vosges, many museums and other places of historic interest and beauty. The spine of Le Marais is rue Vieille du Temple. A little walk up this narrow, busy street, and you’ll find yourself in a pedestrian cul de sac called rue du Tresor. At the second door on the left, you’ll be welcomed at any time of day or night for a casual yet delicious refreshment at La Chaise au Plafond. You might even see Mimi there while you sip your iced chai latte, because she has made her dream come true, having lived in Le Marais for 20 years.
Once inside your courtyard (in French that’s la courette), you climb one flight of stairs (or you can take the elevator) to this lovely, newly renovated apartment. Light streams into the space. In the dining and kitchen area two floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the peaceful courtyard below.
The living area, also light drenched with two enormous windows onto the street, offers chic modern comforts and amenities - a large flat screen television, a new designer sleep sofa. The bedroom adjoins the salon, and also has a large window that faces the street. But the tiny street is so quiet that you would never know you’re not facing the gated courtyard below.
The up-to-the-minute designer kitchen, lovely to look at, is fully equipped with microwave, dishwasher, coffee machine… all you need to make your lovely spot into a Parisian breakfast nook or café.
The bathroom, also elegantly remodeled in modern style and luxury, offers a large Italian shower.
Nearby are the Pompidou/Beaubourg Museum, the Picasso Museum, the Louvre Museum and the magnificent Place des Vosges.
The Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est train stations are both nearby. Orly and Charles de Gaulle Airports are easily reachable by taxi or Metro.
