The Village of Bedoin
Bédoin is a lively provençal village about 40 km from Avignon, and five minutes' drive from the foot of the Mont Ventoux. The village itself has several restaurants and cafés as well as the full complement of shops and services: butcher, baker, grocer, greengrocer, two small supermarkets, pharmacy, post office, bank with Visa cash dispenser, news-agent/tobacconist, doctor, dentist, etc. There are also facilities for tennis, riding and bicycle hire.
Bédoin
A splendid provençal market is held in the village on Monday mornings, and the nearby town of Carpentras has one of the largest markets in Provence every Friday morning.
There is a clean lake for swimming in Mormoiron, which is only a few minutes' drive away, and an excellent outdoor municipal swimming pool in Bédoin itself.
Le Mont Ventoux
The scenery in the region is both spectacular and varied, ranging from vineyards, lavender fields and olive groves to ochre cliffs, pine forests and the slopes of the 2,000-metre Mont Ventoux. Fifteen minutes' drive away are the vertiginous Gorges de la Nesque, through which the road leads to the lavender fields of the Plateau de Sault. The lavender festival in Sault, in August, is not to be missed. Also near at hand are the lovely hilltop village of Gordes and the twelfth-century Cistercian abbey at Sénanque.
The Avignon theatre and dance festival in July is justly famous, as are the Chorégies in Orange. During the summer almost every town and village has its own fête, with local folklore, wine-tasting and al fresco dining and entertainment, as well as cultural/musical events, usually of a very high standard and often featuring celebrated international performers.
L'Abbaye de Sénanque
Bédoin is in the heart of the Côtes de Ventoux wine-producing area, and local co-operatives as well as independent producers are numerous. All of them welcome tasting and discussion. Other, more celebrated appellations in the immediate area are Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau -- while Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a mere 40 km away.
There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose in the surrounding towns and villages, offering good and sometimes outstanding cuisine. Some of the set menus in particular offer excellent value for money.
