of Paris. Turn left on leaving the apartment & you arrive in rue LEPIC
known all over Paris for his street merchants. The Montmartre area, with
its narrow winding streets, colourful street markets & rich collection
of cafés & restaurants.
Home of the Moulin Rouge (hence the name of the apartment), Sacre Coeur
& the former residences of Picasso, Pissarro & an entire generation
of French and expatriate artists, Montmartre has retained it’s uniquely
village character.
Turn right on rue LEPIC & after a 15mn walk you’ll reach the
elegant Palais Garnier Opera House, designed as part of the great Parisian
reconstruction of the Second French Empire instigated by Emperor Napoleon
III, & completed in 1875. The Opera House now features ballet &
other concerts & has guided tours for visitors.
Within a few minutes walk of the Opera House are the quintessentially
Parisian department stores, Galleries Lafayette & Le Printemps, with
their colorful domed interiors & unrivaled selection of clothing &
accessories.
Cultural attractions of the quarter also include three jewel-like museums:
the Musée de Montmartre, which once housed the studios of Renoir
& Suzanne Valadon; the Musée Gustav Moreau, the home &

Set on a hill 130 meters high, the Montmartre area looks grandly over
all of Paris. The name "Montmartre" comes from "Mont des
Martyrs" (the bishop St. Denis, the priest Rustique, and the archdeacon
Eleuthère were all decapitated there around the year 250). In the
12th century, Benedictine monks built a monastery near Rue des Abesses.
It later became the seat of a powerful abbey. The Montmartre area was
the centre of a lot of activity during the Paris Commune in 1871. Despite
the resistance of the people of Montmartre, the area remained under Federal
control from March 18 until May 23.
The end of the 19th century saw Montmartre become the centre of artistic
life in Paris and the model of a free, bohemian existence. Many artists,
from Berlioz to Picasso, lived, worked, and played here. These creative
spirits (and their café, the Lapin Agile) helped keep this area
the city's intellectual and artistic centre up until the First World War.
In 1873, the National Assembly declared its plans to erect this grand
Romano-Byzantine Basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart and intended for
public usage. Construction began in 1876 on the plans of Abadie; he intended
it to echo the Cathedral of St. Front in Périgueux, which he had
restored.
Thanks to public donations, the building was completed in 1910 and consecrated
in 1919. The Sacré-Coeur measures 100 m in length and 50 m in width,
and is crowned by a distinctive 83 m dome. The 84 meter high bell-tower
shelters an 18.5 ton bell with an 850 kg clapper. The interior of the
church hides a lot of treasures of its own: marble sculptures, stained-glass
windows, and mosaics. Standing on the stairs of the Sacré-Coeur,
you can see a panoramic view that dominates Paris.
Around the Place du Tertre, you can see that Montmartre was once a small
village within a big city.
