The Marais-Rue Chapon apartment is located in a building that was erected in the late XVIIIth century. It retains some very specific cachets of that era such as apparent beams, stone wall and red octagonal tiles.

Being located in a very narrow street, Marais-Rue Chapon enjoys peace and quiet.
Marais in French stands for swamps, which tells you that this part of town was a very important swampy area. Around the 15th century the King decided to dry this part of town to make it a strong point to build a castle. His whole court followed him and private townhouses and huge mansions were built--each one larger and better than the others. Marais was boom town. History goes on and another King decided to build an even larger and farther away Chateau. With the exit of the court, the Marais went down and down for years. About 30 years ago changes came to Marais and that part of town became and still is one of Paris' most active districts.

The Marais is the oldest and most historical area in Paris. A place of aristocratic residence in the XVII century, it was abandoned during the Revolution and became an architectural wasteland. The Marais was not touched by Baron Haussman in his 1830's effort to make Paris the most modern city in IXXth century Europe. The Marais retains its pre IXXth Century splendorr. In 1962 it was declared a historical monument and the resurrection began in earnest. The area is once again fashionable with many galleries and restaurants, fashion boutiques and cultural centers. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity.

Nearby are Pompidou/Beaubourg Museum, the Picasso Museum, the Louvre Museum, the Place des Vosges.

Both train stations Gare du Nord et Gare de l’Est are near by. Orly’s and Charles de Gaulle’s Airports are easily reachable by taxi or a private limousine services. The last suggestion will be for you to go to spend a day or two in Deauville in the Normandy region. Train schedules are plentiful unless you rather drive there in less than 2 hours?

The nearest subway stops are Rambuteau or Hotel de Ville. Taxi can be called for a pick-up right at your building, or you can get one very easily by the Pompidou Museum.
